Ok, so I saw a post on my instagram by a fellow artist I follow. The statement the post made was simple … Digital Art is real art. Period.
How is it that we do not fault writers for using a computer over a typewriter, or even pen and paper for that matter…
What about mixed media artists who design their patterns using photoshop or some other art software then use a sewing machine to create.
Why is it when digital artists create they don’t get the same credit for the time they put in to creating their work?
Has AI art put a stain on our chosen way of designing and creating? Personally I don’t use any AI in my creation that I am aware of, but do people assume that we all do if we create digitally?
And don’t even get me started and the 🤬 show that was NFTs. I would love to know why a bunch of apes in different clothes was worth so much money.
Artists work hard when they are creating, and just because they choose not to create on a canvas does not mean that they are not talented or have not developed their skills. In my own case I was always more comfortable creating when I was holding a pencil so being able to “paint” on an iPad with a utensil that feels similar to what I am comfortable holding has expanded my ability to create.
Is the option to reproduce the art part of the problem? Does the fact that once you have a digital file you can reproduce it readily decrease its value? I have prints of famous works of art and it doesn’t make me devalue the original work, so I hope that isn’t what is going on here.
Also, I don’t want to bash on artists who do use more physical mediums. Their work is amazing and I am always amazed and impressed by the level of talent artists have.
The point I am hoping to convey is that we should not be valuing one type of art over another. Digital artists, like all artists have chosen their medium and we should give that a similar respect to other artists.
I also want to say that I hope that this isn’t a blanket devaluing of art because of social media. While it is a great way to see and discover artists we have to remember that artists are doing a job and need to be supported.
This week feels like an all over rant from me. Please bear with me because I hope to stay more focused going forward. I just have so many thoughts on this and would love to hear yours!
For those who want to see it here is the post that inspired my little rant…
It is as follows…
