Failing Creatively: Art vs. Artist 2024
The time of year when artists share their 9 best pieces, and we all get to see their creative genius!
Every year around this time, you’ll see artists’ social media feeds filled with 9×9 grids. Some artists put their own photo in the center, while others fill them with their top nine photos. Some ignore the most popular posts for favorites, yet all seem to do it. So, how do you decide which is the best way? It’s entirely up to you as the artist, and the hope is that it’ll get the magical engagement that most artists want and lead to the magical fame, fortune, or increased following.
Last year, I wrote about this regular artist practice and found my feelings about social media changing and evolving. After a year of spending less time with the algorithm, I was able to create more work that I’m proud of this year. I also noticed that my blog and art evolved as a result.
I was able to make more work for clients, especially some amazing work for podcasts, logos, and episode art have been some of my favorite creative outlets, and I have more lined up for 2025.

When it came to picking my favorite nine with bonus this year, I ran into a bit of a pickle. Most artists choose their nine based on their top-performing posts. But I didn’t really spend as much time “working” on my social media. So, my top-performing posts were all unusual because the algorithm hated my feed. As a result, I decided to choose my own favorite nine for the year.

As we near 2025 and a new year starts, I’m determined to reduce my social media usage even more. I’ve tried out new platforms, but it’s been tough to disconnect. Substack has become a new favorite, but I feel guilty when I can’t keep up with my favorite writers there. If you haven’t tried it yet Supernova is the social media that gives back and is truly a wonderful place. My Bluesky has also seen a lot of growth in its following, could it be that I’m ahead of the curve and one of the cool kids to have joined this new platform early? I doubt it, but I’ll take the boost to my ego that I have more followers than I follow for once.
In all honesty, my goals for 2025 are to work on more children’s books and grow my blog and Substack. Both platforms along with my Ko-fi are the best ways to see my work as it’s released especially if you’re interested in freebies and fun art. What are your goals for the new year?
Till next time, keep failing creatively, and see you next week with some good news.
