Art vs. Artist 2023
There are things I have realized in recent years as I look at social media…
We are all looking to make ourselves seen in some way. This is probably why I, like many other artists make these nine panel grids at the end of every year to show off some of our best, or favorites, or top performing art works every year.
These were my favorites this from 2023, along with a selfie that I posted on my instagram...
However, I have come to a realization that started growing at the beginning of the year and has become a reality for me as the time goes on.
We don’t need social media.
I am sure I am not the only person feeling this as 2024 begins. I have seen numerous people post this type of thing, from YouTube to Substack, people are reevaluating their relationship to social media so this post from me is not a new thing. Frankly, I am tired of feeling like no one sees my work because the algorithm is against me, but I am not writing this as a swan song. I will continue to use social media. That said my relationship with it going forward will hopefully be a healthier one.
I think social media makes my imposter syndrome worse and distracts me from my creative practice. Case in point, I struggled to find my favorite works for this years grid you see above. That is not something I want. Even if a good chunk of my work is awful I want to have finished work to pick from. So this is me letting all who stumble across this know that my website will probably be the best place to stay up to date with my work. I can’t continue to feed the algorithm for little to no results. I have a small but decent following but if only a small fraction engages and there are hardly any new people discovering me ever.
As the year has gone on it has been easier and easier to step away because of these reasons. So I plan to welcome the new year with new plans and fresh ideas.
