Weekly roundup for September 16th, 2023 with art and uplifting stories
Starting with some art…
Did anyone else not realize that a Yeti and Bigfoot were supposed to be basically the same species when they were kids? I might be the only one who did not make that connedition as a child. It was only when I watched the first Monsters, Inc. in high school that I finally made that connection 😂. Well, that said, I hope you all had a wonderful week.
Now to the Good News…
Historic Victory for Environmental Justice on Chicago’s South Side
The City of Chicago has to rethink it urban development and land use. The city has decades of complicated land use policies and discriminatory zoning which have left people off the south side with the short end of the stick. Now thanks to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and three south side non-profits the city of Chicago is required to take serious steps to remediate the damage and address the inconsistencies that have turned these areas into what essentially amounts to “sacrifice zones”. This is a huge win for the people of the south side but it is all around better for the environment as a whole.
Good News for Your Sad, Beaten-Up iPhone
In a surprising turn of events Apple is supporting a bill in California that is reinforcing the consumers right to repair their devices. This support is a massive shift from a company that until recently was not the biggest fan of allowing consumers to repair their devices. This is a positive step from a company that publicly states they want to do what is right for the planet and environment. And as with most things what is good for the planet is also good for the consumer. Personally, as I get older I am becoming a bigger and bigger fan of running my everything into the ground before getting rid of it.
Maine’s puffin colonies recovering in the face of climate change
Puffin colonies in Maine are defying the odds and thriving amidst climate change. The birds were able to thrive despite rising water temperatures threatening their usual food source. This is a testament to the resiliency of animals and ecosystems in the face of our ever warming climate. While this is good news we also need to take climate change seriously and advocate for a more sustainable future.
