Starting with some art…
With it getting colder in the northern hemisphere I am feeling the need for sun and warmer days. So to that end I am sharing a sunny sandy desert. Apparently I did not think to include water so this is definitely not a beach though we can always imagine the beautifully cool and refreshing beach. I hope you all are keeping warm and that your week has been filled with joy and happy days.
Now to the Good News…
Treasure For 3 Miles: A Scatter Trail from the Most Famous Shipwreck is Uncovered Behind the Maravillas
A treasure hunt worthy of the pirates of the Caribbean. The Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas (Our Lady of Wonders), was one of the richest ships to ever sink, going down west of Little Bahama Bank. While it had been thought to be scavenged completely, recently they discovered 3 mi (5 km) of treasure scattered along the seabed. It is believed that the boat had much more treasure on board than what was known officially, and while they thought hurricanes would have scattered the shipwreck over the centuries that is proving to be untrue. This means that archaeologists can study the wreckage filled with olive oil, gold, and jewels. It is quite the find and will make for interesting the analysis. This is such a phenomenal find and I hope that as they decipher the wreck more, that we learn so many new things about the ship.
The Mangrove Grandparents of El Delgadito
A man in the Mexican Peninsula of Baja California has taken it on himself to plant and nurture mangroves in order to restore some balance to the ecosystem where he lives. After spending years coming back and forth to the area for fishing season and seeing and hearing stories about the fishing dwindling and decided to do something about it. A discussion with his daughter taught him about the power and potential of mangroves and he became inspired to try growing the trees and after experimenting he has grown his mangrove forest to over 1.2 million flourishing trees over 12 years. Even when the forest had sections destroyed following a hurricane in early 2022, the mangroves were found to have protected vast areas of the community from being destroyed. This is an amazing story of the resilience and determination of a place due to a man who wants to help his community flourish.
Thank you so much for joining me on my journey through the good news this week. We need to remember that there is light at the end of every tunnel and that together we can make the world a better place.
