Art & Good News 11-18-2023
Weekly roundup for November 18th, 2023 with art and uplifting stories
Starting with some art…
We all love to be fancy sometimes. When I was a kid my mom had found an antique top hat from Marshall Fields in a shop, and I got to keep it. I remember keeping it on my bookshelf that feeling quite fancy myself for having it on display. Honestly, wish I still had it but I am not sure what happened to it. Hopefully, your week was full of fancy fun 🎩.
Now to the Good News…
The nature-inspired art bringing delight to dull urban spaces
As always a positive art story will always make my feed if I can find it and this gem from Positive News is no exception. Two artists from London are trying to bring green spaces to people the only way they know how, through murals. Connection to nature is proving more and more essential to our health, be it mental and physical. And while a mural of flowers isn’t the same as an actual green space, this idea is fun to me because it gets at something important which is that we all need more plants in our lives. You cannot always convince your local municipality to let you rip up an old unused parking lot so you can make it into a garden oasis, but you can paint a beautiful mural of flowers that will hopefully inspire passers by to get out into nature more. Whenever I am feeling uninspired nature is my own respite that helps me reset and start fresh so whether it is because you passed by a mural or because you just need to get outside go spend some time in nature you’ll be much happier for it.
New York surgeons celebrate completion of first whole-eye transplant
Surgeons in New York have achieved the unthinkable, they have successfully transplanted a full eye into a patient. Currently the procedure is cosmetic, as the new eye is not sending signals via the optic nerve to the brain resulting in vision. However, this is a huge step forward in a previously untested area of health. It is opening a whole host of potentials for people in the future as more is done and studied on this groundbreaking procedure. Who knows, maybe someday there will be ways to restore sight for people and it will all be because of this first step.
China’s carbon emissions set for structural decline from next year
The Chinese government has had such a boom of clean energy that if all stays on track their carbon emissions could peak next year before beginning a steady decline. They met all their installation targets by September, that for the first time the installation projects are expected to meet and exceed the projected annual increase in energy demands in the country. If they can maintain this level of investment, they would see a massive decrease in demand for fossil fuel generated energy. As the worlds largest CO2 emitter this could prove to be a massive win for the planet if it proves true, however, all countries need to adopt cleaner energy generation as well if the world is to meet its targets set by the Paris Agreement.
Thank you so much for joining me on my journey through the good news this week. We need to remember that there is light at the end of every tunnel and that together we can make the world a better place.
