Starting with some art…
Easter for me was always a puzzle. The Easter Bunny doesn't just give you presents; you have to find the gifts. To me that makes it more of a challenge, and I think I always liked a challenge. It is the same reason my favorite book genre is a mystery, I like to try and have something to solve. I wonder if someday my kids will feel the same way?
I hope you had an amazing week, and if you live in the United States I hope you had a fun Independence Day.
Now to the Good News…
Rarest wild cat in the world no longer endangered: 'The greatest recovery of a cat species ever achieved'
The Iberian Lynx went from being one of the rarest and almost extinct cats in the world to recovered. The Lynx is from Spain, Portugal, and Southern France and by the early 2000s there were none left in Portugal and extremely low everywhere else. Their food source as well as habitat disruption and loss were the primary drivers of the decline. This lead to a twenty year conservation effort that took collaboration of governments, scientists, NGOs, private companies and community members to make the conservation effort a success. The restoration of the Lynx population to the point where it can be removed from the endangered species list is a testament to what we as humans can do to restore balance to nature.
Shasta Tribe finally reclaims ancestral lands long buried by Klamath River Reservoir
Shared land stewardship is a benefit to all. The natives who have long traditions of land management and histories to support that will be able to care for land and nature in sustainable ways. California has turned over approximately 2800 acres of land back to the Shasta Tribe. The plan is to remove the dam, build an education center, and connect a public trail center to go along with the restoration of rivers and lands from the Klamath River Reservoir area.
Future impact of proposed fossil fuel projects must be assessed, UK court rules
The Supreme Court in London has ruled that companies have to account for the future impact of fossil fuel projects when assessing the environmental impact of a project. This is limited to fossil fuels not other carbon intense industries like steel, however it is still a big win for climate activists. Also if I am understanding the article correctly this will have to be presented to cities before projects begin and cities can then decide if they even want to allow the projects to go forward. When it comes to climate we really need to avoid new oil and gas projects and this is a huge step in the right direction for that.
Till next time keep looking for the good news, and see you next week with some creative failures.
