Starting with some art…
With summer comes the awakening of bugs and critters, and while I do not mind bugs I would be lying if I didn’t admit that sometimes they creep me out. Regardless of that though there a plenty of bugs that I find super interesting to draw. This is one where the prompt was dragonfly and I liked the idea of playing around with the dragon part of the name 😊. Which for me was a fun twist to play with. I hope you all have had a lovely week.
Now to the Good News…
Here’s why dam removal is a climate solution
Collectively as a society we are trying to move the needle on climate change. In some cases these attempts are focused on reducing greenhouse gasses and in some cases we are trying to move the needle by adapting our society in order to be more resilient in the face of our changing planet. Dams which are well documented as doing more harm than good can be part of the solution just by removing them. Removal can in all likelihood actually restore damaged ecosystems restoring their balance. Check out the full article on GoodGoodGood to see all ten different ways that removing dams can make our planet more resilient.
Paris is transforming an industrial neighborhood into the Olympic Village—and then turning it into permanent housing
Paris is making bold moves when it comes to the Olympic Games that they are hosting this summer. They started with recycled plastic chairs, they moved on to recycling the olympic medals, and now they are planning ahead with the entire Olympic village. They have thought ahead with the area they are using and it is planned to be converted into affordable housing, along with apartments for sale. The whole area is going to be converted into a new neighborhood with parks, public transit, shopping and more. While this could end up not coming to fruition (other Olympic Games have made similar promises), this is the first time where the thought about what happens after has been considered from the start. Hopefully, Paris continues to lead the charge and show the world what sustainability can really be.
Creative cement recycling breakthrough promises to slash emissions
For every ton of cement produced there is a ton of CO2 that gets emitted into the atmosphere. This makes cement the third largest CO2 emitter in the world; first and second being China and the United States respectively. All this to say that the University of Cambridge has found a similarity in the recycling process of steel which allows for the cement to recycling using the same electric kilns used to recycle steel. This process has the potential eliminate the carbon using renewable energy to heat up the kilns. If continued testing proves viable and expands we could drastically reduce carbon emissions from one of the largest emitters in the world.
