Starting with some art…
Did you ever watch Yogi Bear cartoons? When I was little I didn’t realize they were reruns and I loved watching Yogi Bear, Flinstones, Jetsons and so many other cartoons. When I think of camping, Yogi Bear trying to get into the picnic baskets and outsmarting the park ranger are all I think of. Well maybe Smoky the Bear too … 🤔.
Now to the Good News…
Big Oil to pay for climate change damages in Vermont
Vermont has become the first state in the Union to take the largest polluters to task over their role in the damage caused by climate change. They passed a law that creates a commission to study the expenditures that have been incurred by residents and the state due to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Once the comprehensive study, looking at everything from public health, economic development, and agriculture to name a few, will then use a polluter pays model to go after the corporations that extract the fossil fuels. While there will most certainly be challenges to the law, there is precedent for this new law in the federal Superfund Program that is aimed at cleaning up pollution. The law has also inspired other states in New England to also look into how they can pass and implement similar laws. For far to long companies have been able to get away with a lot of pollution and laws like this might be a new way to hold them accountable.
Archaeologists Uncover 900 Ming Dynasty Artifacts From Shipwrecks in South China Sea
Archeologists working over much of 2023 and 2024, have uncovered over 900 artifacts from two different ancient shipwrecks dating from both ends of the Ming dynasty. Pottery, porcelain, copper, and more are a testament to the amazingly large network of trade network they had. The amount of trademark blue and white porcelain that was found alone is testament to the power of their trade, and how in demand the porcelain was. History like this needs to be preserved and it seems like there will be much more study to come from a shipwreck like this.
Clearing a Path from Prison to the Bar Exam
Organizations like Formerly Incarcerated Law Students Advocacy Association (FILSAA), are trying to break down the barriers for formerly incarcerated people to become lawyers. Which gives them opportunities upon their release from prison. I found this article a very interesting read. I like the idea of finding ways for people to have second chances.
