Art & Good News 2-10-2024
Weekly roundup for February 10th, 2024 with art and uplifting stories.
Starting with some art…
When you see a prompt of Rip where does your mind go?
In my case it went to the graveyard in book seven of the Harry Potter series and the Peverell brothers from the tale of the three brothers. Personally, I always liked the quote from Dumbledore that I put on the bottom of the headstone. It has always been my head cannon that the late great headmaster probably got the quote from researching the Deathly Hallows and the suspected family that were the masters of death.
This week I pose a question, what is your favorite book or scene from a book? And isn’t it time for a re-read? For me I have discovered a love of the Percy Jackson series and have been knee deep in re-reading it to my kids. I hope you all have a wonderful week.
Now to the Good News…
Move to sustainable food systems could bring $10tn benefits a year, study finds
Did you know that current farming practices are not helpful to the climate crisis? Current food systems account for one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. That then begs the question of what can be done? A girl’s gotta eat right? Well a new study found that if we transition to more sustainable farming practices we would bring about huge economic and welfare benefits.
One of the largest ways we could do this is by shifting subsidies and tax incentives away from large mono-crop farms that rely on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. If that money was redirected to smaller farms, then we would be able to increase biodiversity, and carbon sinks. These smaller farms would also need all the support they can get so that as the laws change they do not get left behind, which in turn could cause protests over the changes. The other thing that we as consumers can do is put less burden on the system by eating less meat, which has grown to be one of the largest global emitters of carbon and results in one of largest drivers of deforestation.
If we get this transition right we can increase biodiversity, eliminate food scarcity, make a huge dent in cutting global emissions, have massive health benefits across the board, and help farmers wages. The report also points out that the overall cost of this transition is anywhere from 0.2-0.4% of global GDP which is a drop in the bucket when you think if the financial, health, and climate saving benefits.
